Junayd b. Abdul Rahman was appointed by Caliph Hisham as viceroy of Khorasan in 111 AH. Tabri states that he (Junayd) had presented a precious necklace to Umm Hakeem wife of Caliph Hisham and Hisham liked that necklace very much, Junayd then presented Hisham another precious necklace and being pleased with those two gifts the Caliph appointed Junayd as Wali or Viceroy at Khorasan. Junayd arrived in the midst of a battle between the Pagan Turks alluded to as “People of Bukhara and Soghad” by Tabari, and the Arab/ Muslim army. Junayd was victorious and the Turks fled the battlefield. The nephew of the Turks’ Khaqan was arrested and sent in chains to Damascus. Junaid then appointed Mahshar b. Mazaham as Wali at Merv and Surah b. Alhur as deputy at Balkh. Other appointments were Qat’n b. Quteba at Bukhara, Walid b, Qa’qa at Herat and Muslim b. Abdul Rahman at Balkh. Junaid died at Merv in 116 AH due to fever (Though the Caliph had been displeased with him and had sent a replacement but Junayd passed away before arrival of the new Wali).
